.n. as the obama administration explanation of the attack in benghazi continues to einvolve this morning. secretary of state hillary clinton suggesting in a gathering of world leaders that the attack was the work of an al qaeda affiliate. the secretary saying this. now with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to maneuver, terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and networks in multiple directions. they're working with other violent extremists to undermined the democratic transitions underway in north africa as we tragically saw in benghazi. that is the first time secretary clinton acknowledged al qaeda as possibly playing a role in that attack. we'll have more on that coming up. a group of senators are now demanding that susan rice, america's ambassador to the u.n., provide more answers what happened in benghazi. new hampshire senator, kelly ayotte one of those four senators who sent a scathing letter to ambassador susan rice, she will be here to tell us first-hand what that is all about. bill: meantime the violence in syria getting worse by the day. a pair of massive explosions rocking

correspondent arwa damon in benghazi. also joining us david ignatius, the columnist for "the washington post." david, let me start with you. you have some information, fascinating and intriguing information that the attack on the consulate may have been linked to al qaeda operatives in libya as a revenge plot. what exactly are you hearing? >> wolf, i heard from a source who has good sources on the ground in the libyan underground that the talk there was that the attack on the u.s. consulate that killed our ambassador stevens on september 11 last week was conceived as by the people who did it, an act of revenge to retaliate for the drone attack that killed a key al qaeda operative and planner. i ran that yesterday by a u.s. intelligence official who said that although some of the elements that i'd heard did not check out that they had heard the same thing. they'd heard this talk of revenge for the killing as a motive for the attack on the consulate in benghazi. so the u.s. government has been hearing the same thing that i picked up from my source. >> that would seem to suggest, david, i'm goi

americans, including the u.s. ambassador to libya. our nbc reporter is in benghazi as police close in on the consulate attackers. >> reporter: a team of fbi investigators has arrived here in benghazi. they're gogt to now begin sifting through the rebel and ashes at the u.s. consulate to identify any clues or evidence that may help them in identifying who is behind the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador and three other americans. we also understand that the libyan government for their part is cooperating with the u.s. intelligence agencies and other agencies involved in the investigation. the libyan government believes that this was a preplanned attack, that this was not a spontaneous outburst of violence as some have suggested. so far they have four individuals in their custody. they say several more are under surveillance. they are trying to see whether these individuals have any important information that can benefit the american investigation. meanwhile, u.s. intelligence assets including unmanned aerial drones are keeping an eye above the skies of benghazi and eavesdropping

. the department wouldn't say whether there had been a threat. earlier this month, the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, was attacked and burned, and ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed. that attack took place amid violent protests that broke out over an internet movie that ridiculed islam. well, late today, the filmmaker, was arrested in los angeles. federal prosecutors say that by uploading the film on the internet, he violated the terms of his probation on a previous check fraud conviction. iowa kicked off the primary and caucus season. well, today it became th first battleground state to in the general election. at least 400,000 iowans are expected to vote before election day, november 6. in other battleground states, voting begins in colorado october 22, more than two million people are expected to cast early ballots there. in florida, balloting starts october 27 with more than four million early voters expected. john dickerson is in our washington bureau. he's our political director. and, john, i wonder what impact does all this early voting have on the campaigns
